ARTIST STATEMENT
My work explores the rich complexity of biodiversity through layered abstract paintings that reveal the hidden depths of the natural world. Working with acrylic paint, pencil, ink, and crayon, I build up surfaces through multiple transparent and opaque layers. Using fixative, I preserve the underlying marks that peek through the final composition. This layering technique mirrors the stratified complexity that I observe in nature- the way ecosystems build on one another, how geological time creates visible history, and how life forms interact in overlapping systems. The natural world fascinates me not for just it’s surface beauty, but for it’s hidden layers of connection and interdependence. A forest floor reveals centuries of growth and decay; a wetland exposes the delicate balance between water, earth, and countless species; a meadow holds intricate relationships invisible to the casual observer.
My paintings attempt to capture this sense of depth and interconnection through the physical act of layering materials, allowing earlier marks to ghost through subsequent applications of paint and drawing media. While my work is primarily abstract, landscape elements occasionally emerge-suggesting horizons, organic forms, or environmental textures. These elements serve as anchors that ground the viewer while the abstractions opens up space for personal interpretation and emotional response. The interplay between recognition and mystery in my paintings reflects how we experience the natural world: familiar yet endlessly surprising.
My ultimate goal is to create beautiful paintings that celebrate the extraordinary richness of life on Earth.
